5 Easy Steps to Well-Being by Brad Meyers http://wellbeinginsideandout.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/5-easy-steps-to-well-being/

In today’s hustle and bustle world it’s hard to always “keep it together“. There are stresses everywhere we look.  Work, love, friends, food, money, social life. It can all become quite taxing.  Here are 5 steps on how to find a state of well-being:

Step 1:

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. We’ve all heard this saying, but here’s how you do it.  When a situation approaches you that can cause you some stress, smile.  It really is that simple.  You look the situation in the face and smile. And fake it if you have to.  When you smile it tricks your brain into thinking you are happy and nothing can bother.  The next time you are in a small situation give it a try, before you allow the small stuff to become big stuff.

Step 2:

Exercise and Eat Well. Not the easiest thing for all of us to do, but if you can find just that little bit of motivation to get started its smooth sailing from there on out.  The only way you are going to get started exercising and eating the way you need to is to have respect for yourself and confidence knowing you can do it.  Start out trying 10 minutes at home exercising.   Do some cardio and add a salad to your dinner.  You will start to feel better about yourself immediately and you will have proven to yourself that you can do it. If you keep this up, increasing the amount of workout time and accepting new healthier eating habits, you’ll be on the road to well-being in no time.

Step 3:

Choose to Listen to Happier Music. There’s a great quote from one of my favorite authors, Nick Hornby, “Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable, or was I miserable because I listened to pop music.”  The gist is what you take in is what you’re going to give out.  If you listen to a lot of down depressing music (songs about lost love and broken dreams, etc.) then try switching it up to something that’s a little more upbeat, especially with more upbeat lyrics.

Step 4:

Meditate. You may have never tried meditation before, but it is a very simple procedure to alleviate some of the worries that may plague your mind.  Here is a very simple way to get started, as you progress you may seek out deeper methods but this is great for beginners and a method I still use.

-Quiet your Surroundings.  (turn off tv, no radio while you’re in the car)

-Close eyes (unless you’re in the car :) )

-Imagine that you are driving down the highway and whatever it is that’s troubling you are on the billboard signs.

-As you progress further down the road you are passing the billboards leaving your troubles behind.  And as you pass them you realize they are behind you and they can no longer bother you. And you begin to smile.

Step 5:

If you can’t Smile it Away, Journal it. That’s right sometimes just writing it down can make it seem not as real.  Often times “ journaling” becomes a great problem-solving skill.  You’ll begin to see other ways out once you write down your thoughts on a particular subject more often than you would if you store it all upstairs.

So there you have it.  5 quick and easy steps you can take to help battle self-destructive stress and get you on your way to well-being.  If you put these steps into effect and formulate a plan that works for you, you’ll be able to handle anything. We all know that will be bumps in the road, the trick is to have a plan ready.
